John Toki - Sculptural Form

February 10 - March 3, 2018

The John Natsoulas Gallery is proud to present a selection of John Toki’s world-famous ceramic sculptures. The various artworks on display will highlight Toki’s distinctive aesthetic. Visitors will be able to immerse themselves in his world, as they walk among his towering forms, some as tall as 11 feet in height! Don’t miss this exciting opportunity to see his famous sculptures!

John Toki is among the most revered and established contemporary sculptors in the Bay Area. His enormous abstract, spiritually-charged sculptures provoke deep contemplation. The works seem to murmur quietly, conveying magic through their monumentality. The forms in his pieces are best characterized as semi-abstract, decorated with intimate detail and texture. Toki comes from a family that valued education and art, encouraging him to be the hard-working creative entrepreneur that he is today. Receiving his BFA at CSU Hayward and his MFA from California College of Arts and Crafts, John went on to be the president and owner of Leslie Ceramic Supply Company.  His work has been exhibited in galleries across the United States, and he has been commissioned in Berkeley, Oakland, and Sacramento.

Exhibition Installation

The installation lasted from 8 AM until well into the night on January 28, 2018. Judd Takai, son of Glenn Takai, documented the extensive process.

The resulting 9-minute time-lapse video offers insight into everything that goes into preparing an exhibition at this scale. Toki and his team seamlessly move thousands of pounds of ceramics, preparing it for visitors.

This video will play in conjunction with the exhibition, projected throughout the duration of the show.
