Clay Vorhes - Trapeze

The art of trapeze

“Clay Vorhes’s little figures playfully fly through space, sometimes suspended from a trapeze swing, at other times walking a tight wire, always “living dangerously,” to use Nietzsche’s phrase, in abstract space.  Each canvas is a Suprematist square, emblematic of modernism at its purest, intriguingly divided into a prismatic play of planes, each a sort of fragment of space pieced together to form an eccentric pattern, seemingly unstable yet clearly delineated and fixed in place.  It is as though Vorhes has pieced together a large stained glass that has broken into pieces, some of them trapezoidal in shape, alluding to the title of the series.  The broken geometry of the space becomes the expressive background for the self-expressive trapeze artists, seemingly performing effortlessly, and with even more exacting geometrical precision.”

The John Natsoulas Gallery is pleased to invited you to come see the newest series of paintings by Clay Vorhes. Vorhes studied with famed painter Wayne Thiebaud, whose role as a caring mentor is seen in the art. These two artists are close friends and Vorhes has learned a lot from his guide. Thiebaud is a realist whose work is full of colorful invention. Vorhes absorbed the craft of painting but he also learned how to invent new shapes and colors to give vivid life to his paintings. His clever and creative variations of form lend his paintings a joyous charm and whimsy.

The exhibition will be on view from January 8 to February 2, 2014.
