INCLUDED ARTWORK

The John Natsoulas Gallery is pleased to offer the opportunity to interested institutions to exhibit paintings, collages, and mosaics by Jean Varda (1893 – 1971). A true Renaissance Man, Varda thrived within the Bohemian circles in Europe throughout the first half of the twentieth century. His activities with both the Cubists in Paris and the Bloomsbury Group and Surrealists in England resulted in a cultivated social network. His keen interests in the literary and avant-garde world melded within his distinct style with the Byzantine influence from his childhood in Greece. Upon departing Europe at the outbreak of WWII, he found himself enmeshed in a thriving art scene on the West Coast. In establishing new social milieus in Monterey, San Francisco, and Sausalito, he formed attachments to the leading writers and artists of the Beat Movement.

The John Natsoulas Gallery is pleased to offer the opportunity to interested institutions to exhibit Emmy Lou Packard (1914 – 1998). Known as a visionary artist, printmaker, and activist, her works on paper reflect Packard’s deep commitment to social justice and community. Trained as a muralist, Packard studied with Diego Rivera and formed a close friendship with Frieda Kahlo in Mexico. Upon her return to California, she became a leading voice in politically engaged art.

Her prints, often executed in linocut, feature bold, graphic compositions that celebrate workers, families, and the landscape of California. She emphasizes strength, resilience, and solidarity. A champion of accessible art, she saw printmaking as a democratic medium - one that could inspire change and empower communities.
