The John Natsoulas Gallery is thrilled to be hosting Sign, Signifier, Second Chances, the newest body of work by Fernando Valdez. While Valdez will include several of his acrylic on panel works in this exhibition, his creative artistic explorations often go far past the bounds of traditional painting or sculpture, and instead he recontextualizes diverse themes through esoteric juxtapositions in accordion books. These intricate constructions offer meaningful insight into his deep explorations of philosophy.

Please join us also for the opening reception on September 6 from 7-9pm, featuring live music and free refreshments!

“I went to UC Davis to study Art Studio and Art History. While there, I had the opportunity to study with Wayne Thiebaud and David Hollowell, as well as Seymour Howard an art history professor. His influence was, perhaps, the strongest as he helped me to find my surest footing. That education gave me the foundations in art practice which define this current exhibition.

As always, I approach my art as I approach my life – with curiosity. I am constantly seeking to identify the everyday metaphors that humanity uses to engage with everyday life. Our cultures create and define those metaphors, and I aim to understand where they came from and who precisely gave them to us. And, most importantly, whether they are true to lived experience.

These books and paintings allow for me to explore the metaphors, memes, and default expressions that are ceaselessly in my sphere and periphery. These topics and themes point me towards questions about how individuals sense and perceive their inner and outer lives. The repetitious depictions of landscapes emphasize how the essence of the natural world often pulls me into recognizing a broader view of my place in the world.

My purpose in creating, regardless of medium, is to questions how we impart meaning into life and what are the multifaceted meanings of the cacophony of stimuli constantly assaulting our senses.”
